Phone scammers made an unusual video call to a senior resident from Talgar, Kazakhstan. A fraudster appeared on camera using a face resembling international action star Jackie Chan.
The victim said that the scheme began with a call allegedly from an outpatient clinic. Unknown individuals told him he needed to undergo a medical examination and asked him to provide the SMS code in order to receive an appointment ticket.
«Today I received a phone call from fraudsters claiming to be from an outpatient clinic. They did not specify which one. They told me to undergo tests and procedures, and said an appointment ticket was needed, which required a code. I gave them the code,» the man said.
After that, other individuals, claiming to be from a «financial control department,» contacted the man. They told him that fraudsters had gained access to his personal data and that his money was at risk.
To appear more convincing, one of the scammers joined a video call using an AI face mask. His face strongly resembled Jackie Chan’s. The reason the fraudster chose the image of the action star remains unclear.
During the call, the elderly man’s relatives began to question the identity of the «staff member.» When asked to present identification, the fraudster showed a document on camera, but the photo on the ID card did not closely match the person on the screen.
Later, the scammers attempted to persuade the family to withdraw money and transfer it to another account. The relatives recognized the fraud in time, and the elderly man contacted the police.
In the comments section, users joked about «evil Jackie Chan,» while several others noted that the use of AI and video calls makes such scams more convincing and dangerous.
Law enforcement authorities remind that employees of banks, police, government agencies and medical institutions never ask people to provide SMS codes, transfer money to «safe accounts» or take out loans over the phone.
