A former U.S. government official has been arrested after FBI agents discovered hundreds of gold bars worth more than $40 million at his Virginia home, according to the BBC.

David Rush, a former senior official in the CIA, was charged with criminal theft of public money in a complaint filed last week. Authorities allege that between November 2025 and March 2026, Rush made several requests to the U.S. government for large amounts of foreign currency and gold bars intended for work-related expenses.

Investigators later said there was no record indicating that Rush had informed his employer of the location or use of the gold bars and foreign currency he had received.

Following a referral from the CIA, the FBI searched Rush’s home on May 18 and seized approximately 303 gold bars weighing about one kilogram each. Agents also found around $2 million in cash and 35 luxury watches, including several Rolex models.

In addition, Rush has been accused of providing false information about his education and military service during the hiring process and of improperly receiving military leave pay.
