The foundation of cooperation between Kazakhstan and Russia is a shared responsibility for the stability and development of the broader Eurasian region, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said following talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Astana.

Tokayev described Putin’s state visit as an exceptionally important event for the development of the strategic partnership and allied relations between the two countries. He also thanked the Russian leader for an article published ahead of the visit.

«I fully agree with the point that the foundation of Kazakh-Russian cooperation is a shared responsibility for the stability and development of the entire Eurasian space,» Tokayev said.

«I also express my sincere gratitude for the kind words addressed to Kazakhstan and for the high assessment of the reforms being carried out in our country,» he added.

Putin highlights economic cooperation

Putin, in turn, emphasized the business-focused nature of the talks. He said the two sides signed a joint statement outlining key areas of cooperation, along with a package of intergovernmental and interagency agreements covering sectors ranging from energy and finance to healthcare.

The Russian president also highlighted growing economic ties between the countries. According to Putin, bilateral trade reached nearly $29 billion in 2025.

«We are confidently moving toward the $30 billion mark, and I have no doubt this threshold will be surpassed soon,» Putin said.

«I am confident that today’s visit and talks will further strengthen the multifaceted Russian-Kazakh relationship for the benefit of our countries and peoples,» he added.

Russia remains Kazakhstan’s largest investor

Tokayev noted that Russia has become the largest foreign investor in Kazakhstan’s economy. At the same time, Kazakh investment in the Russian economy has reached $9 billion, he said.

The Kazakh president described Putin’s state visit as highly successful and expressed confidence that the agreements reached would become part of the «chronicle of strategic partnership» between the two countries.
