Cyprus ready to bridge Kazakhstan and EU: Presidents hold talks in Astana

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides held one-on-one talks. They have discussed key matters of the bilateral cooperation and prospects for strengthening ties between Kazakhstan and the EU.

Tokayev noted that they first met in 2019, when Christodoulides served as Cyprus’s Foreign Minister. The Kazakh president also noted that the two countries have achieved significant results in diplomatic and economic ties since then.

“We have established embassies in our capitals. Direct flights between the two countries have been launched, along with a number of other important initiatives. At the same time, I believe we have significant potential to expand bilateral cooperation,” the president highlighted.

Ties with the European Union

Christodoulides expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and pointed to the launch of direct flights between the two countries. The Cypriot president confirmed his readiness to serve as a bridge between Kazakhstan and the EU to deepen their partnership.

Dostyk Order and embassy opening

Later, during the joint media statements, Tokayev awarded Christodoulides the Order of Dostyk, 1st Class, for his contribution to strengthening bilateral relations.

n turn, the Cypriot president thanked Tokayev for the high state award. Christodoulides also said that he intends to personally attend the opening of the Cypriot embassy in Astana.
