Construction has commenced on a massive “Data Center Valley” cluster near Ekibastuz, a project intended to establish the nation as a premier Eurasian digital hub, according to a report in Kazpravda. The ambitious initiative aims to attract global hyperscalers and will eventually house 10 modern data centers with a total capacity of 1 gigawatt.

The first phase of the development, led by national operator Kazakhtelecom, is scheduled for completion in 2027. This initial stage includes the construction of a 125-megawatt facility and essential utility networks. To support the project’s long-term growth through 2033, authorities have allocated 177 hectares of land and reserved an additional 1,300 hectares near the Ekibastuz GRES-1 power plant. The city of Ekibastuz in northeastern Kazakhstan, home to the GRES-1 and GRES-2 power plants, generates more than 40% of the nation’s total electricity output.

Groundwork is already underway, including land leveling and fencing. To meet the high cooling and operational demands, the site will draw 2,300 cubic meters of water daily from the Satpayev Canal. While the first phase will utilize an existing 215-megawatt substation, subsequent expansions will require significant upgrades to the local power grid.

Beyond its technological footprint, the valley is expected to be a major employment driver. Officials estimate the construction phase will create approximately 1,500 temporary jobs, with more than 250 permanent positions available once the facilities are fully operational.
