According to Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the country must accelerate the development of its transport and logistics infrastructure as regional competition intensifies. Speaking at the latest joint session of parliament, he announced a major new infrastructure project for the capital.
«In the aviation sector, we are rapidly expanding our route network and developing full-fledged air hubs. From this perspective, the construction of a new airport in Astana is a task that brooks no delay. Construction must begin as soon as possible,» Tokayev said.
Another strategic initiative aimed at strengthening Kazakhstan’s position in international markets is the creation of a national cargo airline, which is expected to enhance the country’s logistics capacity.
Railways and road repairs
During his speech, the president also highlighted the development of the country’s land transport network, noting that motor road transit volumes have doubled over the past five years to 6 million tons. Revenue generated by road freight carriers reached $3 billion last year, nearly matching that of railway operators.
To strengthen its railway transit capacity, Kazakhstan launched the second track on the Dostyk–Moiynty railway section and the Almaty bypass rail line last year. In 2026, construction of the Moiynty–Kyzylzhar and Darbaza–Maktaaral railway lines is scheduled to be completed. Next year, the Bakhty–Ayagoz railway line will be commissioned, while the modernization of road border crossings is expected to finish.
At the same time, the government has begun repairs on 13,000 kilometers of roads, with work already completed on 6,000 kilometers. According to Tokayev, this is the largest road infrastructure renovation project in the history of independent Kazakhstan.
