One of WhatsApp’s most highly anticipated features is finally on the way: Users will soon be able to message each other without revealing their phone numbers. Instead, they will exchange unique usernames, similar to how users connect on Telegram and Instagram.

The feature will be rolled out gradually worldwide over the coming months. Beginning in July, users will have the option to reserve a username in advance, though doing so will not be required.

Users will be able to change or delete their usernames at any time. Once the feature is fully launched, phone numbers will no longer be visible in private chats. A username will be all that’s needed to communicate.

However, a phone number will still be required to register an account. Users will also continue to have access to existing safety features, including the ability to block and report unwanted contacts.

WhatsApp said the new feature is designed to enhance user privacy. Many people are reluctant to share their phone numbers, particularly in large group chats or when communicating with people they don’t know.
