Kazakhstan is launching an e-waste management project to reduce the risks posed by hazardous substances in discarded electronics to human health and the environment, while also recovering valuable materials from the waste. The United Nations will support the country in this effort.

Who is funding the project?

The project is being implemented with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) as part of the Global Electronics Management (GEM) program, led by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

What is the e-waste problem?

E-waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world. Rapid technological advances and the shortening life cycle of electronic devices generate millions of tons of discarded electronics every year. Although many of these products contain hazardous substances, they also contain valuable materials, including precious and critical metals, which are often lost if the equipment is not properly recycled.

«E-waste management issues extend far beyond the purely environmental agenda. They overlap with areas such as industrial policy, digitalization, international trade, resource security, climate policy and sustainable economic development,» said Ruslan Tukenov, director of the waste management department under Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.

What does the project involve?

During the pilot phase, participating cities will test different models for collecting e-waste from residents. The project will also provide technical support to recycling facilities and help improve the sorting and recovery of valuable materials. In addition, the authorities plan to introduce tools to identify hazardous substances and monitor e-waste flows.

«For Kazakhstan, this project is more than just an environmental initiative. It creates an effective platform for dialogue between the government, businesses, recyclers, importers, experts and civil society organizations,» said Vera Mustafina, head of the Center «Cooperation for Sustainable Development.»

When was the project launched?

The project was officially launched on June 30, 2026, in Astana. The launch ceremony was attended by representatives of government agencies, international organizations, electronics manufacturers and importers, recyclers, and members of the expert community.
