Geely, one of China’s largest automakers, will partner with Ford Motor Co. to assemble vehicles at Ford’s Valencia plant in Spain, according to China Daily.
Under the agreement, Ford will own a 66% stake in the joint venture, while Geely will hold the remaining 34%. The venture is expected to launch in the first half of 2027, pending EU regulatory approval. Production is scheduled to begin in 2028.
What the plant will produce
The Valencia facility will build vehicles for both Ford and Geely with a range of powertrains, including gasoline, hybrid and fully electric models.
Ford will continue producing the Kuga crossover and plans to add two new models:
- A crossover developed jointly with Geely that will be offered with multiple powertrain options.
- A compact SUV from the Bronco lineup.
Geely plans to manufacture two all-electric crossovers for the European market under its own brand.
Why it matters
The Valencia plant has operated since 1976 and is one of Ford’s largest manufacturing facilities in Europe. It has an annual production capacity of about 500,000 vehicles. Over the years, the plant has produced models including the Fiesta and now manufactures the Kuga crossover.
The partnership will help Ford make better use of its manufacturing capacity while giving Geely a stronger foothold in the European market. The move comes as automakers face rising trade barriers and intensifying competition across Europe.
