Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have begun implementing administrative and technical measures to exchange land plots as part of the demarcation of their shared state border, Kyrgyz National News Agency Kabar reported.
What is changing and where
A meeting of the two countries’ joint working commission was held in Kyrgyzstan’s Kadamjay district. Experts and government representatives began resolving property, administrative and legal issues.
As part of the border demarcation process, the villages of Chongara and Tash-Tobo, formerly administered as part of Uzbekistan’s Fergana region, were transferred to Kyrgyzstan. The majority of the villages’ residents are ethnic Kyrgyz.
- Population: According to preliminary data, about 2,500 people live in the two villages.
- Citizenship: Registration procedures are underway ahead of residents obtaining Kyrgyz citizenship.
- Land exchange: In return, Kyrgyzstan will transfer an equivalent plot of land in the border area to Uzbekistan.
Community outreach
A joint working group has been established to engage with residents. It is co-chaired by Baktybek Toksonbaev, first deputy plenipotentiary representative of the president of the Kyrgyz Republic in Batken Region, and Behzod Sayfullaev, deputy head of Uzbekistan’s Department of Migration and Personalization.
Officials are already meeting with local residents to explain the procedures for relocation, registration and the protection of their property rights.
