Kazakhstan has recorded a new wave of deepfakes using the images and voices of well-known foreign actors, athletes, and other public figures, the Center for Combating Disinformation under the Central Communications Service of the President of Kazakhstan reported.
According to the center, the fake videos feature celebrities making false claims that Kazakhstan is allegedly tightening its migration policy. The creators of such posts use artificial intelligence technologies and information manipulation techniques.
The purpose behind these videos
The center says the primary goal of such posts is to create a negative image of Kazakhstan and neighboring countries, as well as encourage social media users to spread disinformation further.
“The main purpose of such information attacks is to artificially create a negative image of Kazakhstan and neighboring countries, as well as to draw social media users into further spreading false information,” the center said.
How to spot a deepfake
Experts urged the public not to trust emotionally charged videos without first verifying their source and not to share questionable content.
For an initial check of photos, audio, and videos, specialized services that analyze content for signs of AI generation can be used. The center cited Hive AI Moderation, RealityGuard and Undetectable AI as examples.
The center also reminded the public that the speed at which fake content spreads depends directly on users’ reactions, and therefore recommended checking information against official sources before sharing or publishing such content.
