Kazakhstan approves Jaecoo J5 and J7 PHEV for local production in Almaty

Two Jaecoo models have received vehicle type approval (VTA) for serial production in Kazakhstan. The documents confirm that the J5 and J7 PHEV will be assembled at the Astana Motors Manufacturing Kazakhstan (AMMKZ) plant in Almaty and reveal key specifications of the upcoming models.
The J5 is set to be Jaecoo’s first locally produced model
The VTA for the Jaecoo J5 was registered on Aug. 18, 2026. The multi-brand AMMKZ plant is listed as the manufacturer and assembly facility.
The crossover will feature front-wheel drive and a 1.5-liter SQRE4T15C turbocharged engine producing 108 kW (approximately 147 hp) and 210 Nm of torque. The engine is designed to run on gasoline with an octane rating of at least 92.
The J5 measures 4,380 mm long, 1,860 mm wide and 1,650 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,620 mm and a curb weight of 1,482 kilograms.
Jaecoo J5 equipment
According to the VTA, the vehicle’s equipment list includes dual-zone climate control, a 13.2-inch multimedia screen, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a panoramic roof, heated front seats and steering wheel, a power driver’s seat, a power tailgate and wireless charging.
However, some features, including a 360/540-degree surround-view camera, automatic parking, a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist and automatic emergency braking, will be optional.
A 52 Ah battery for the J7 PHEV
The Jaecoo J7 PHEV also received its VTA certificate on Aug. 18. It is a plug-in hybrid with a series-parallel configuration. The powertrain features a 1.5-liter turbocharged SQRH4J15 engine producing 105 kW (approximately 143 hp) and 215 Nm of torque.
The electric motor is integrated into the transmission housing and can function as both a starter-generator and a traction motor. The system supports electric-only driving, combined operation of the internal combustion engine and electric motor, and battery charging from the engine or through regenerative braking.
Electric range
The J7 PHEV’s traction battery is located under the vehicle floor. According to the technical specifications, it is a lithium iron phosphate battery with 112 cells and a capacity of 52 Ah. Its operating voltage ranges from 224 to 408.8 V, while the maximum electric range is 106 kilometers.
The crossover measures 4,500 mm long, 1,865 mm wide and 1,670 mm high. Its wheelbase is 2,672 mm and its curb weight is 1,870 kg.
Localization confirmed
Both VTAs are valid until Aug. 17, 2029. The documents explicitly list AMMKZ in Almaty as the manufacturer and assembly plant. This means that the J5 and J7 PHEV have been certified for serial production in Kazakhstan. The start date for local production has yet to be announced.
Earlier this year, the Jaecoo 7 was reported as the best-selling new car in the U.K.
