Kyrgyzstan detains man over calls for violent seizure of power on Threads

Kyrgyzstan’s State Committee for National Security (GKNB) detained a suspect accused of publicly calling for a violent seizure of power, the agency’s press service said on Aug. 21.

A man born in 1980 was detained as part of a criminal case under Article 327 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic, «Public calls for the violent seizure of power using information and communication networks.»

According to investigators, he systematically published posts on Threads containing public calls for the violent seizure of state power, as well as materials that could contribute to public disorder and destabilize Kyrgyzstan’s social and political situation.

Suspect admitted to publishing the posts

The GKNB said the suspect admitted to being involved in the previously identified posts. He was placed in the GKNB pretrial detention center.

The agency reminded the public that such offenses carry criminal liability.

The Coup?

Previously, criminal proceedings against former GKNB head Kamchybek Tashiev were linked to a collective appeal known as the «Letter of 75,» published on Feb. 9. The document called for snap presidential elections amid controversy over the length of Sadyr Japarov’s term.

At the time, the Interior Ministry’s investigators characterized the move as an attempt to destabilize the situation ahead of a planned coup. The court acquitted Tashiev of abuse of office but convicted him of preparing for a violent seizure of power.

The court sentenced him to four years in prison and ordered the confiscation of his property. The court also ordered three years of probation supervision.
