Kazakhstan, China plan mutual recognition of driver’s licenses

Citizens of Kazakhstan and China will be able to use their respective countries’ driver’s licenses when traveling between the two countries. Kazakhstan’s Interior Ministry has prepared a draft agreement on the mutual recognition and exchange of driver’s licenses between the two countries.

Under the draft regulation, citizens of Kazakhstan and China will have the right to use valid national driver’s licenses in the other country to drive passenger vehicles.

A key provision will allow drivers to exchange their licenses directly. Citizens of the two countries who are temporarily or permanently residing in the other country will be able to exchange their licenses without undergoing training or taking qualification exams. The procedure will be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the host country’s domestic legislation.

The intergovernmental agreement aims to simplify administrative procedures and promote transport, tourism and business ties between Kazakhstan and China.

Implementation of the project and the exchange of documents will begin after the agreement is officially signed, all domestic procedures are completed and the agreement enters into force.

Previously, a similar agreement with the UAE came into force on July 25, allowing Kazakhstani drivers to exchange their national driver’s licenses there without taking theoretical or practical exams.
