Nick Kyrgios accepts one-month suspension, eligible to compete again

Australian tennis player (ATP World No. 918) Nick Kyrgios tested positive for cocaine after playing at the ATP 250 Mallorca Championships in late June and had been provisionally suspended since Aug. 4. He is now eligible to return to competition after accepting a one-month suspension, the BBC reported.

The 2022 Wimbledon finalist had initially faced a default three-month suspension under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regulations, but the term was reduced after the tennis player entered an approved treatment program. The suspension ended Sept. 3 after its completion.

According to the BBC, Kyrgios admitted to the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) that he used cocaine at a nightclub in Magaluf early on June 20, before he was due to play in Mallorca. Separately, he made a statement on Instagram admitting to the positive test and apologizing to his family, fans, sponsors and supporters.

In 2026, Kyrgios was defeated by Australian Adam Walton in the round of 32 at the ATP 250 Mallorca Championships, reached the round of 16 at the ATP 250 Stuttgart Open, defeating Frenchman Corentin Moutet before losing to Japan’s Sho Shimabukuro, and lost to American Aleksandar Kovacevic in the round of 32 at the ATP 250 Brisbane International in singles.

In doubles the same year, Kyrgios and Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik lost in the first round at Wimbledon to El Salvador’s Marcelo Arévalo and Croatia’s Mate Pavić. He reached the quarterfinals at the ATP 250 Stuttgart Open with Bublik after defeating Jakub Paul and Ryan Seggerman before the quarterfinal was decided by walkover. At the Australian Open, he lost in the first round paired with Thanasi Kokkinakis to Australians Jason Kubler and Marc Polmans. At the ATP 250 Brisbane International, he reached the round of 16 with Kokkinakis after defeating Australians Matthew Ebden and Rajeev Ram before losing to Frenchmen Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul.
