An old town built as a set for the movie «Nomad: The Warrior» (2005) will undergo restoration and become part of a tourist zone.

According to the Almaty region’s governor’s office, a large tourism cluster development project has begun on the banks of the Ili River. Local authorities aim to restore the significantly worn «Nomad» movie set, build a pedestrian bridge to the Tanbaly Tas area and enhance the surrounding landscape. The plan also includes the creation of recreational and glamping areas, as well as cafés.

The region’s governor, Marat Sultangaziyev, said that approximately 500 tourists visit Nomad City monthly, while around 4,000 visit Tanbaly Tas.

The official noted that the decision to breathe new life into the film set came in response to growing tourist interest.

Currently, a seven-kilometer road to the site is under construction, with parking and lighting planned along the route. Construction is scheduled for completion before the end of the year.

Nomad City was built specifically for the historical movie «Nomad,» released in 2005. The site lies near the Ili River in the Almaty region, surrounded by picturesque crags and steppes. In September 2025, the movie set town was transferred to the governance of the administration of the city of Qonaev.

Nomad City is more than 100 kilometers from Almaty, making it a 2.5-hour journey from the city and about one hour from the nearest city, Qonaev.
