During fasting, dates are among the most commonly consumed fruits. They are a natural source of energy and relatively high in calories. Many people also begin their day with dates, as they help prepare the digestive system for food after a long period without eating. Demand for dates typically increases during Ramadan. Below are several tips on how to choose the tastiest and highest-quality options.

Dates are rich in iron, magnesium, zinc, manganese, potassium, calcium, and vitamins A, C and B. One hundred grams of dates contains about 274 calories, meaning they can easily replace sweets. There are more than 1,500 varieties worldwide, though roughly eight to 10 are commonly sold and consumed.
Medjool (king dates)

Medjool dates are considered the «king» of dates. They are large, soft and very sweet. They are grown in Israel, Jordan and the U.S., and their size changes little even after drying.
Mazafati

Mazafati dates are smaller than Medjool but softer and very sweet. They are dark brown with a slightly pinkish tone and a shiny surface. Suitable for daily consumption and gentle on the stomach, they are often given to children. These dates are best stored in the refrigerator.
Ajwa

Ajwa dates hold special significance in Islam and are traditionally associated with Prophet Muhammad. They are grown only in Medina, Saudi Arabia, making them relatively rare and expensive. Ajwa dates are small, dark in color and mildly sweet.
Deglet Noor

Deglet Noor is among the most affordable varieties. It is widely grown in Tunisia and Algeria and is one of the most exported types of dates. These dates are semi-dry, lightly sweet and lighter in color. They also have a long shelf life and are easy to transport, which is why they are commonly sold in stores.
How to choose quality dates
- Check the ingredients. The package should list only dates. If glucose syrup, sugar, sucrose or additives are included, it is better to avoid the product.
- Look at the surface. Natural dates appear dull and slightly dry. Shiny or sticky dates may have been coated with syrup or oil, increasing their sugar content.
- Inspect the skin. Avoid dates with torn or damaged skin. White powder may indicate sugar crystallization and excessive sweetness.
- Choose dates with pits. Pitted dates are typically more processed, while whole dates retain more of their natural nutrients.
- Smell the product. Dates should have a light, sweet aroma. Any foreign smell or mold means they should not be eaten. One spoiled date can affect the entire package.
Storage tips
Always wash and dry dates purchased at markets before eating. Store them in a sealed container in the refrigerator for longer freshness.
