Using acupressure slippers to treat foot pain is not only ineffective but can also make existing problems worse. Orthopedist Sergey Krasilnikov warns that the popular footwear may aggravate certain foot conditions.

«These spikes aren’t a medical treatment; they’re a form of massage, and they certainly aren’t suitable for everyone. When might such slippers be useful? Only in a few specific situations: if you have healthy feet with no deformities, want to relieve fatigue after a long day on your feet, or simply want to stimulate blood circulation,» the doctor explains.

Krasilnikov stresses that the slippers may serve a preventive purpose but should not be considered therapy. According to the orthopedist, the spikes apply localized pressure and stimulate sensory receptors, potentially increasing blood flow. This can produce a pleasant sensation and a feeling of lightness in the feet.

When to avoid acupressure slippers

The orthopedist warns that people with flat feet should be cautious, as localized pressure may increase strain on the feet. Those with bunions should also avoid massaging the affected joint, as this could trigger inflammation.

«If you have diabetes or reduced sensitivity in your feet, you might not even notice a minor injury. If you have cracks, small wounds or a fungal infection, the spikes can irritate the skin and potentially introduce infection. Furthermore, if there is inflammation — characterized by pain, redness or swelling — both heat and pressure can make the condition worse,» the doctor explains.

Ultimately, Krasilnikov advises against spending money on what amounts to an illusion of treatment. Anyone experiencing persistent foot pain should consult an orthopedist rather than rely on acupressure slippers.
