In March, the Astana International Exchange (AIX) reported 638,200 accounts, a 3.8fold increase over the same period last year. Individuals from Kazakhstan account for the vast majority of these accounts. As of the end of March, there were 636,300 such accounts.

The number of foreign citizens who have decided to open an account on the AIX has also grown twofold (1,132). Local companies placed third in this ranking with 579 accounts compared to 517 in 2022.

Foreign companies aren’t as active on the exchange, although the number of accounts opened by such businesses has been slowly growing. In March 2023, there were 72 such accounts (57 last year). Concerning other types of accounts, like local and foreign omnibus accounts (type of accounts used by financial intermediaries, such as brokerages, that allows them to hold assets on behalf of multiple clients in a single account) have shown little or no changes.

AIX also noted that the number of local and foreign brokers on the exchange is about the same as it was last year (38 vs. 35). Since the beginning of the year there were 1,143 off-exchange transactions for $258 million while aftermarket reported 10,200 transactions for $67.5 million.

According to the Central Securities Depository of Kazakhstan, the number of brokerage accounts grew in March by 23.4% to 1.19 million, including 680,000 sub-accounts and 508,000 broker accounts registered through aggregated omnibus accounts.
