Kazakhstan’s government calls Timur Turlov best president of sports federation in Kazakhstan

The Ministry of Tourism and Sport has awarded Timur Turlov, the president of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation with the title of «Best President of Accredited Sports Federation» in 2023.

What happened? Turlov received the «Best President of Accredited Sports Federation» title during an official ceremony of the 2023 Uzdik Award by the Ministry of Tourism and Sport.

«This award is a result of hard work by the members of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation and our chess players. This is nice that all the efforts by Kazakhstani chess players have been noticed and duly appreciated by the authorized agency. During this year we have proven that the federation has huge growth potential that we must realize. We are going to do our best to do so. I want to say thank you to all our colleagues, chess players and the Ministry of Tourism and Sport for their support and trust,» Turlov commented on the award.

What kind of medals have Kazakhstani chess players won? In 2023, Kazakhstani chess players won 116 medals, including a silver medal for the team chess championship, a bronze medal of the female chess team at the Asian Games as well as two gold and two bronze medals for the Asian Continental Championship.

In addition, this year Kazakhstan hosted several international tournaments. For instance, in April 2023, Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren battled for the title of world chess champion in Astana. In June, the city of Almaty hosted the Asian Continental Championship. In August, the first international chess championship for teams from regular schools was held in Aktau.

According to FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich, Kazakhstan can become one of the long-term leaders on the global chess stage.
