In the first quarter of 2024, the total amount of transshipment of cargo through the seaport of Aktau surpassed 1.1 million tons. This is a 14% increase over the same period last year, according to Kazakhstan Railways.

According to the company, the port exported 24,000 tons of grain and more than 920,000 tons of oil and oil products in the first quarter. The port also shipped 7,400 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), which is a 33% increase over the previous year. There are no details about what type of cargo it was.

Many types of cargo, including thermoplastic elastomers, are transported in containers. There are more than 6,400 of them on the Trans-Caspian International Trasport Route. This is 85% more than it was last year. Previously, Kazakhstan Railways reported that the Sea Port of Aktau is capable of processing up to 70,000 TEU per year.

In late December 2023, Kazakhstan Railways reported that the number of shipments via the port of Aktau rose by five times. At the time, the railway company said that when a fleet of transshipment machinery is renewed in 2025, the volume of exports will increase to 100,000 TEU per year. In late January, the Ministry of Transport reported that Kazakhstan could transfer the ports of Aktau and Kuryk on the Caspian Sea in trust management.

In September 2023, the port of Aktau once again obtained international status. In September 2018, the government took this status from the port as it wanted the facility to go private.
