Electric vehicle boom in Kazakhstan: sales surge by over 60%

Kazakhstan’s electric vehicle (EV) market is experiencing rapid growth, with the number of EVs increasing by more than 60%, according to the Bureau of National Statistics.

As of Dec. 1, 2024, the total number of registered electric vehicles in the country, including cars, trucks and buses, reached 12,587, compared to 7,680 just a year earlier.

Passenger cars saw the most significant growth, rising from 7,383 to 12,119 units. The country also registered 338 electric trucks and 130 electric buses.

Almaty is leading in terms of the number of electric cars, boasting 7,309 registered units. The capital, Astana, follows with 1,510 vehicles, while the Almaty region recorded 638 electric cars.

Recent media reports highlighted a 32.5% drop in sales of Chevrolet vehicles in Kazakhstan during 2024. Meanwhile, Hyundai has emerged as the top automotive brand in the local market.
