A plant for recycling plastic waste and producing PET (polyethylene terephthalate) preforms is set to be built in Almaty. The announcement came from Darkhan Satybaldy, the city’s mayor, following a recent meeting with Murat Kökoğlu, CEO of Turkish firm Köksan Holding.

The facility will be constructed on a 15-hectare site in the Alatau district and will involve an investment of nearly $84 million. Once operational, the plant is expected to employ 138 people and produce up to 80,000 tons of PET preforms, semi-finished products used in manufacturing plastic bottles and containers, as well as 24,000 tons of recycled plastic annually.

«The project aligns with our sustainable development strategy and will become an important part of the city’s waste recycling ecosystem,» Satybaldy said.

Founded in 1968, Köksan Pet Packaging Industry Co. is one of the largest packaging manufacturers in Turkey and Europe. Its products are used by major global brands including Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Danone and Nestlé, and are exported to more than 100 countries.

Waste recycling is a key priority for city officials. Earlier media reports highlighted that Chinese investors would also build a waste processing facility in Almaty. Shanghai SUS Environment Co. plans to invest $270 million in a plant that will not only recycle waste but also convert it into electricity.
