The Norwegian Biathlon Union announced the death of Sivert Guttorm Bakken, a 27-year-old member of Norway’s national team. He was found dead in his hotel room in the Italian town of Lavazè. The cause of death has not yet been determined.

Career highlights

Bakken was a four-time Biathlon World Cup stage winner, including three victories in relay events. He also won three European championship titles during his career and was regarded as one of Norway’s promising biathletes.

Return after serious illness

This season, Bakken had earned a place back on the Norwegian national team following a prolonged absence caused by myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle that can reduce the heart’s ability to pump blood.

According to previous statements from Bakken and Norwegian media reports, his heart condition first emerged in 2022 after he received a third dose of a coronavirus vaccine.

Medical examinations later confirmed inflammation of the heart muscle, and Bakken underwent extensive treatment and monitoring. Doctors cleared him to resume full training only last summer, marking a significant milestone in his attempted return to elite competition.
