Jay Bryant, 52, has pleaded guilty to his involvement in the 2002 killing of Run-DMC DJ Jason Mizell, known as Jam Master Jay, the BBC reported.

Bryant admitted in a New York court that he helped others gain entry to the Queens recording studio where Mizell was shot and killed. Prosecutors said he opened a rear fire door, allowing the attackers to enter undetected. His DNA was also found on a hat recovered at the scene.

Bryant had previously denied the charges after being indicted in 2023. Two other men, Karl Jordan Jr. and Ronald Washington, were convicted in 2024 in connection with the case. Prosecutors argued the killing was motivated by revenge and a dispute over a drug deal, though both men have challenged their convictions. A judge later overturned Jordan’s conviction, citing a lack of evidence establishing motive.

In court, Bryant acknowledged he knew a gun would be used in the attack and expressed remorse, but did not name any additional individuals involved.

Mizell’s killing sent shockwaves through the music industry and remained unsolved for nearly two decades before charges were brought.

Bryant now faces a potential sentence of 15 to 20 years in prison, which also includes penalties related to separate drug and firearm offenses.
