A waste incineration project by Junxin Environmental Protection is moving forward in Almaty, with construction planned in the city’s Alatau district.
Project scope and capacity
The facility is designed to process up to 2,000 tons of waste per day and generate as much as 60 megawatts of electricity, which will be supplied to the city’s power grid.
Total investment in the project is estimated at 130 billion tenge (more than $280 million). An arrangement has been reached with Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Ecology, along with key provisions covering waste supply and electricity distribution.
Jobs and environmental standards
The plant will be equipped with emission treatment systems that meet international environmental standards, according to project details. It is expected to create about 700 jobs during construction and 120 permanent positions once operational.
Officials say the facility should help reduce pressure on landfills around Almaty.
The company operates similar facilities in China, including the Heimifeng waste treatment center in Changsha, which processes about 10,000 tons of waste daily and generates more than 1.4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
