Kazakhstan’s Agency for Atomic Energy said active construction of the country’s first nuclear power plant will begin in 2027.

Agency spokesman Shyngys Ilyassov said that during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ongoing state visit, Kazakhstan and Russia plan to sign two intergovernmental agreements related to the project. The agreements will cover construction of the nuclear power plant and the project’s financing arrangements.

Earlier, Alexey Likhachev, CEO of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, told several media outlets that the plant is expected to begin operations in the mid-2030s and will be commissioned in stages.

Kazakhstan’s first nuclear power plant will be named Balkhash. The facility will be built near the village of Ulken in the Almaty region, along the shores of Lake Balkhash.

The project is being implemented by a consortium led by Rosatom, and the plant is expected to be commissioned between 2035 and 2036.
