Kazakhstan tests AI investigator to solve criminal cases

Kazakhstan’s Prosecutor General’s Office is introducing artificial intelligence (AI) into the law enforcement system. Neural networks are set to forecast crime, automate the processing of service documents and conduct continuous observation and analysis of information.
Big data
The Criminal Threat Forecasting Center under the Committee on Legal Statistics and Special Accounts has already sent 192 advisory letters to government agencies with recommendations on threat prevention. Access to 38 fraudulent websites has been blocked, and 16 public alerts have been issued warning of new fraud schemes.
«The Center’s implemented solutions include systems for monitoring the media space and online fraud, analysis of public appeals submitted through eOtinish [an online platform for submitting appeals and requests to government agencies] and predictive models for street crime and recidivism,» the Prosecutor General’s Office stated.
Criminal cases
In addition, a pilot project to introduce AI in criminal case investigations is being implemented jointly with the Ministry of Internal Affairs. It has already been implemented in several police units in Astana and the Akmola region. The digital assistant prepared 231 investigation plans, 72 interview records, 65 indictments and 15 crime orders.

Kazakhstan previously released an analytical report for the international community on the implementation of artificial intelligence in the law enforcement system. The document, titled «Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation of Law Enforcement: The Experience of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Kazakhstan,» was prepared by the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies in collaboration with the Committee on Legal Statistics and Special Accounts.
