Cuban authorities have reportedly begun distributing weapons to some civilians amid concerns about a potential confrontation with the U.S., according to the Venezuelan newspaper Versión Final.

The reported measures come amid heightened tensions in the Caribbean and growing speculation about possible future U.S. actions toward Cuba.

Government reportedly increasing preparedness

According to the report, Cuban authorities have instructed government agencies and local communities to strengthen preparedness measures and review emergency response plans.

Residents cited by local media said concerns about potential conflict with the U.S. have become a frequent topic of discussion in daily life, particularly in the capital, Havana.

Cuban officials have reportedly described the measures as precautionary and aimed at strengthening the country’s ability to respond to emergencies.

Tensions between Washington and Havana

The reports follow recent comments by Marco Rubio, who said that after addressing the situation involving Iran, Washington could shift more attention toward Cuba.

Relations between the two countries have deteriorated further in recent weeks. The U.S. has indicted former Cuban leader Raúl Castro on murder and related charges connected to the 1996 downing of two civilian aircraft operated by the exile group Brothers to the Rescue.

Rubio said Washington still preferred a diplomatic solution but acknowledged that the chances of reaching a negotiated agreement with Cuba were «not high.»
