While many retailers face challenges due to weak consumer confidence and economic uncertainty, candy stores continue to expand in and around New York City, the BBC reported.

Business owners say candy’s relatively low cost, long shelf life and broad consumer appeal are factors helping support growth at a time when many retailers are facing a more cautious spending environment.

The expansion is visible across the region. New stores are opening in New York City, Brooklyn, the Hudson Valley and beyond, while established operators continue to grow. Swedish candy retailer BonBon, which launched in 2018, now operates multiple locations across New York and Long Island and plans to open another store in Connecticut. Swedish chain Candy King also entered the U.S. market with a Manhattan location last year.

The trend comes despite challenges facing the confectionery sector. Retailers report higher wholesale costs linked to import tariffs and increased transportation expenses. Many candy products rely on imported ingredients such as cocoa, while some retailers have reported disruptions from overseas suppliers due to customs-related costs.
