A video dictionary of sign language called e-Ymdau has been released in Kazakhstan. The project aims to expand capabilities for people with hearing impairments to study, communicate, and participate in society.

How it works

The dictionary takes the form of an information base where words and concepts are demonstrated through gestures. An automated search system allows users to quickly find the needed word and view its correct sign language representation.

The video dictionary is available in Kazakh and Russian and covers 21 vocabulary topics. The app is available on the App Store and on the National Scientific and Practical Center for the Development of Special and Inclusive Education website.

Project developer

The resource was created with the support of the scientific and methodological council of the National Scientific and Practical Center for the Development of Special and Inclusive Education and the Committee for Secondary Education of the Ministry of Education.

The authors expect the project to facilitate the learning of sign language, expand access to information for hearing-impaired citizens, and improve the quality of inclusive education for people with special educational needs.

Sign language

More than 30,000 people with hearing and speech impairments, 5,000 of whom are children, reside in Kazakhstan. At the same time, sign language is not yet legally recognized, but the issue is currently under discussion.
