Social media users in Kazakhstan have recently been circulating a viral image of a portly, mustached man with a worried, wide-eyed expression — a reaction face that quickly became a flexible meme for confusion, shock, or awkward situations.

From viral reaction image to global meme

The image began trending in early May, when users started adapting it to express bewilderment in everyday situations, helping it gain popularity across Kazakh-language social media platforms.

As with most memes, the image initially gained popularity in the English-speaking community before spreading to Kazakh-language social media.

Despite its widespread use, the character was not initially identified by name, which only added to its meme appeal.

The meme gained particular traction on Threads, where users widely shared both the original image and altered interpretations.

Over time, variations emerged, including edited versions showing the character in different outfits or situations, while preserving the same exaggerated expression of concern and confusion.

Source traced to «Monster House»

The character was later identified as originating from the 2006 animated film «Monster House.» The figure is Reginald Skulinski, nicknamed «Skull,» who appears briefly in the movie as a supporting character.

However, the viral expression itself does not appear in the original film. Online analysts suggest the widely shared reaction image may have been digitally altered — possibly enhanced or modified using artificial intelligence — before spreading across social platforms.
