A major environmental emergency has been reported in Azerbaijan’s sector of the Caspian Sea after a ruptured underwater oil pipeline caused a significant spill.

The State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) confirmed the accident, according to local media reports. A report of pollution near the coast of Dubendi was received by the head office of the Azneft Production Association, a SOCAR division.

Oil slick discovered during aerial survey

During an emergency helicopter inspection, specialists identified a large oil slick drifting in the waters between the Dubendi shoreline and Pirallahi Island.

Divers were dispatched to conduct a detailed underwater inspection of the affected area. According to specialists, the pipeline showed signs of external mechanical damage.

Cleanup and containment efforts underway

A special task force has been deployed to coordinate the emergency response. Specialized vessels and equipment are operating in the Caspian Sea to contain the spill and clean affected waters and coastal areas.

Environmental impact yet to be determined

Authorities have not announced a timeline for completing pipeline repairs and restoration work.

The full extent of the environmental damage to the Caspian Sea’s unique ecosystem, including its flora and fauna, will be assessed after cleanup operations are completed.
