A new beachwear trend has gone viral on social media: men’s burkinis. The one-piece swimsuits are being promoted as offering protection from intense sun exposure and, in some marketing claims, unwanted attention on the beach.

What a burkini is

A burkini is a modest, full-coverage swimsuit typically consisting of a long-sleeved top, leggings, and a hood. It was originally designed and marketed for women, particularly for Muslim women seeking swimwear that aligns with religious and cultural dress requirements.

The garment is a relatively recent innovation. Designer Aheda Zanetti, an Australian-Lebanese fashion designer, is widely credited with creating the modern burkini in 2004 in Australia to help Muslim women swim and engage in water activities more comfortably.

From women’s swimwear to men’s versions

A men’s version of the burkini has since emerged. Unlike the original design, these products are generally marketed less as religious attire and more as functional beachwear.

Sellers say the garments can help protect against sunburn, jellyfish stings, sand exposure, and other environmental factors. Depending on the brand, they are also marketed under alternative names such as «sanskinis» or «SPF suits.»

Men’s versions are often priced lower than women’s sets, according to online retailers.

Marketing claims and online reactions

Some sellers and users claim the colorful fabric patterns help prevent transparency when wet. However, that argument has also fueled jokes and skepticism on social media.

Users have compared the outfits to superhero costumes, diving suits, and other full-body athletic gear, with discussions quickly turning the trend into a meme in some online communities.

A divided viral trend

As with many viral fashion trends, men’s burkinis have sparked mixed reactions. Some social media users say they are considering purchasing the suits for practical sun protection, while others view them more as an internet novelty than a mainstream beachwear option.
