Almaty akimat has announced new projects aimed at attracting tourists to the mountains. Kursiv LifeStyle takes a look at the attractions planned for the city.

Galiya Tokseitova, head of the tourism department of Almaty, said that the Old Japanese Road, a popular destination for both locals and tourists, will be renovated. The project includes the construction of a new eight-kilometer trail, as well as the installation of wayfinding signs, rest areas, information boards, benches, gazebos and other visitor amenities. Construction is scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2027.

A new Alma-Arasan visitor center is also planned, with construction scheduled to begin in 2026. The project includes the construction of a modern visitor center, site improvements, and the creation of comfortable rest areas.

Tokseitova said these projects would make visiting the mountains safer while reducing the impact of human activity on the natural landscape.

New hotels set to open in Almaty

The department head added that Almaty currently has 81 hotel development projects underway, including eight five-star hotels, nine four-star hotels and other modern accommodation facilities.

By 2028, the city’s hotel room inventory is expected to increase from 12,000 to 18,000 rooms to meet growing tourist demand. Several international hotel projects will open in Almaty. Hyatt Meliora is scheduled to open in 2027, followed by the Curio Collection by Hilton resort complex and The Veil Hotel by the end of 2028.
