Buying sushi, rolls and other Japanese dishes from unofficial vendors or through private Instagram accounts could put consumers at risk of hospitalization, Kazakhstan’s Committee for Sanitary and Epidemiological Control has warned.

Health risks linked to unregulated food sales

The committee said sushi is considered a high-risk food because it is often prepared with raw, lightly salted or marinated fish, seafood and other perishable ingredients that may not undergo heat treatment.

Health officials warned that products made with ingredients of unknown origin, prepared without proper temperature control or handled by cooks without valid health certificates pose a serious health risk.

According to the committee, failure to follow proper food preparation and storage requirements can lead to food poisoning, acute intestinal infections and parasitic diseases.

Officials also expressed concern over the growing number of individuals selling sushi and rolls through social media without the required permits, urging consumers to exercise caution when purchasing such products.

Officials urge consumers to buy from registered businesses

The committee recommended buying sushi and rolls only from establishments officially registered as food service businesses, saying they are required to comply with sanitary regulations and proper food storage standards.

Health officials also advised pregnant women, older adults and children to be especially cautious, noting that these groups face a higher risk of severe health complications from consuming unsafe or low-quality food.
