Gaynor Sullivan (née Hopkins), the prominent Welsh singer better known by her stage name Bonnie Tyler, has died at the age of 75 in a hospital in Portugal. According to her official website, the singer died unexpectedly while undergoing treatment she had been receiving for the past several months.

In May, Tyler underwent emergency surgery for intestinal problems. Following the operation, doctors placed her in a medically induced coma. In June, her representative reported that she had been brought out of the coma, but that her condition remained serious.

Despite the song’s immense popularity, Tyler said she earned very little money from streaming. According to her, the copyright belonged to composer Jim Steinman, meaning that most of the revenue went to the copyright holders rather than to her.

During her career, Bonnie Tyler won a Grammy Award, several Brit Awards and released dozens of albums. Her distinctive husky voice became one of the most recognizable in pop music.
