Starlink killer: Inside China’s breakthrough microwave tech

China has publicly disclosed technical details of a high-power microwave weapon. According to military researchers, the system could pose a significant threat to satellite networks, including Elon Musk’s Starlink.
Designed for electronic warfare
Researchers at China’s National University of Defense Technology said the system is capable of generating microwave pulses with peak power of up to 100 gigawatts. Such output could disrupt or damage satellites operating in low-Earth orbit.
The scientists noted that the weapon is intended primarily for electronic warfare rather than physical destruction of targets.
Potential impact on satellites
The study’s authors estimate that a microwave pulse of about 1 gigawatt could be sufficient to interfere with or damage satellite electronics. They said the newly developed system is capable of producing pulses many times more powerful than that threshold.
The researchers did not provide independent evidence demonstrating the system’s operational performance, and the reported capabilities have not been independently verified.
Technology reportedly enters military use
Some of the systems have reportedly been delivered to the Chinese military, indicating that the technology has progressed beyond the laboratory stage.
The researchers also presented new power systems designed to start the equipment in extreme cold, including temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius.
