A heated debate has erupted on Kazakh social media after blogger Bauyrzhan Bakytzhanuly publicly showcased his life with three wives. His posts have fueled discussions about the legality and ethics of polygamous relationships in Kazakhstan, a secular country where polygamy is not legally recognized.

Bakytzhanuly has turned his social media accounts into a platform for promoting polygamy, regularly posting videos and photos featuring several women with whom he says he shares a household. The women’s faces are concealed in the footage.

«We live, work, raise children and take responsibility for our choices. Everyone has the right to form their own opinion,» he wrote, adding that his family «certainly doesn’t make this world a worse place.»

The blogger said he has no intention of concealing his relationships, arguing that keeping such unions secret is an act of cowardice. In his view, a man who is unwilling to publicly acknowledge his relationships is not worthy of marriage.

In another post, Bakytzhanuly wrote:

«They are not just the decoration of my life. They are its peace. Each of them is different, with her own character, dreams and experiences. I am grateful to Allah for women who know how to love, support and inspire.»

Social media users divided

The posts quickly sparked widespread debate, dividing users into opposing camps.

Many commenters argued that Kazakhstan is a secular republic where polygamy has no legal status and called on law enforcement authorities to respond. Critics said the posts undermine the institution of the family and violate women’s rights under the guise of religion.

Others expressed support for Bakytzhanuly, praising his openness and lifestyle. Some commenters also commended his wives for what they described as wisdom and mutual understanding, while wishing the family well.

Despite numerous users tagging official law enforcement accounts in the comments, neither the police nor other government agencies have publicly commented on Bakytzhanuly’s posts or indicated whether they intend to review the matter.
