One of the most anticipated WhatsApp features is finally becoming available to users. The messenger is gradually rolling out usernames that allow users to communicate with new people without revealing their phone numbers. Kursiv LifeStyle takes a look at what has changed.
Some users have already received notifications that their previously reserved username has become active. Once activated, it can be used instead of a phone number when communicating with new contacts. The feature is being rolled out gradually and is not yet available to everyone.
When the update becomes available on your account, simply go to Settings > Account > Username and choose a unique username if you haven’t already done so. You can change or delete it at any time.
The key new feature is that new contacts no longer need to know your phone number. When enabled, they will see only your username. Your phone number will still be required to register for WhatsApp and will remain visible to people already in your contact list.
WhatsApp emphasized that the new system was developed primarily to enhance privacy. Users can meet new people, join group chats and communicate with others without revealing their personal phone number. At the same time, it is not possible to stumble upon someone by their username, as WhatsApp has no public directory of usernames. You need to know a person’s exact username to start communicating with them.
