Kazakh cardiologists use bioresorbable magnesium scaffolds for the first time

For the first time, the Research Institute of Cardiology and Internal Diseases (RICID) has performed four procedures using bioresorbable magnesium scaffolds. Unlike conventional stents, the new scaffold temporarily supports the artery before completely dissolving. All four procedures were successfully performed under the Compulsory Social Medical Insurance system and were provided free of charge.

According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Healthcare, all four procedures were performed as part of a workshop with Dr. Stylianos Pyxaras, a German specialist in interventional cardiology, participating as an invited expert.

A magnesium scaffold is a temporary vascular scaffold implanted in a narrowed coronary artery to help restore blood flow. Unlike a traditional metal stent, it gradually dissolves once it has served its purpose.

«This technology allows the vessel to go through a recovery period with the support of the scaffold, which then gradually resorbs. This opens up additional opportunities for the natural recovery of the vessel wall,» said Alexey Kolesnikov, head of the X-ray endovascular operating unit at RICID.

The ministry highlighted that all four procedures were successful and were carried out free of charge under the Compulsory Social Medical Insurance system.

Previously, Kursiv.media reported that Kazakhstani and Chinese cardiologists performed minimally invasive heart procedures using the TEER approach at an international workshop in Almaty.
