Almaty will host a new event, the SPOT Film Festival, which will screen films from major international festivals. Kursiv LifeStyle takes a look at which films are on the program.

The SPOT Film Festival will run from Sept. 16 to 20 at the Forum cinema and the Tselinny Center of Contemporary Culture. The program will feature contemporary narrative and documentary films that have screened at Cannes, Venice, Sundance, the Berlinale and other major international film festivals.

The program will also include Kazakhstani premieres. In addition to screenings, the organizers promise meetings with film industry representatives and experts from a range of fields. The festival program is divided into three strands:

  • SPOT DOC × Tselinny focuses on documentaries about people, cities and events shaping the contemporary world;
  • SPOT NOW is a selection of contemporary narrative films exploring technology, cities, identity and social change;
  • SPOT MIDNIGHT is a late-night program of narrative films exploring genre and unconventional themes.

The festival is expected to give audiences in Kazakhstan an opportunity to see films on the big screen that would not normally make it into local cinemas. The full program and screening schedule are to be announced later.
