Icelandair has partnered with Aviationtag, a German company that dismantles retired aircraft and turns them into limited-edition key rings and luggage tags, to give parts of its retired Hekla Aurora aircraft a new life, Euronews reported.
Hekla Aurora, a Boeing 757-200 known for its distinctive Northern Lights-inspired livery, received its colorful makeover in 2014. The design used elaborate airbrushing techniques to recreate the Aurora Borealis. The aircraft remained in service until October 2025.
Following its retirement, sections of the aircraft’s exterior were repurposed to produce collectible tags featuring shades of blue, green and black from the original livery.
The project is part of a broader trend among airlines to repurpose retired aircraft components. Air France has used materials from aircraft interiors to produce accessories, while Lufthansa Group airlines sell a range of products made from recycled aircraft parts, including coasters, cufflinks, furniture and decorative items.
Prices for the Hekla Aurora Edition tags start at €39.95, while collector sets of nine and 14 tags cost €409.35 and €634.30, respectively. The tags have already sold out, but the company said production is continuing and new tags will be available soon.
