Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh, 58, has unexpectedly demonstrated his strength during a visit to a military unit. He took off his jacket, lay on a bench and completed 20 consecutive bench press repetitions. The video quickly went viral, with users discussing how much weight the president was lifting. Kursiv LifeStyle looks at how Mongolian officials surprise the internet.
The video was recorded when Khurelsukh visited Mongolian Armed Forces Unit 084. The president, dressed in semi-formal attire, put the barbell back on the stands after the set as if nothing unusual had happened.
Reports say that Khurelsukh bench-pressed 100 kilograms for 20 repetitions. However, several users examined the markings on the weight plates and estimated that the total weight could have been either 80 or 90 kilograms.
However, even at those weights, completing 20 consecutive repetitions is still an impressive result, especially for a 58-year-old.
Ukhnaa Khurelsukh is not exactly a typical politician. Alongside his political career, he is into heavy music and plays guitar in a rock band he founded after turning 50. He is also a motorcycle enthusiast and even founded a Harley-Davidson fan club in Mongolia. He served in the military in his youth and has been interested in sports and strength training for many years.
Netizens also remembered former Mongolian President Battulga Khaltmaa, who served from 2017 to 2021.
Battulga is also known as a sports enthusiast. When he was young, he was part of Mongolia’s national sambo team. He later took up judo and bodybuilding. He also headed the Mongolian Judo Association and trained regularly even while in office.
Previously, Kursiv.media reported that Kazakhstan and Mongolia discussed establishing a direct highway link between the countries when Khurelsukh visited Astana on a state visit.
