On the eve of the 25th anniversary of the tragic attack on New York’s World Trade Center on Sept. 11, drones recreated the Twin Towers in the sky over New York Harbor. Kursiv LifeStyle found out what the light installation looked like.
According to the New York Post, the installation used 2,977 drones, with each light representing a person killed in the 9/11 attacks. The drones recreated the outline of the Twin Towers, which stood in New York City until 2001.
The light installation appeared over Lower Manhattan on Sept. 9, near the «Tribute in Light» art installation. Created in remembrance of the attack, «Tribute in Light» has become an annual event, sending powerful beams of light into the sky from the former World Trade Center site.
Historical context
On Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four passenger planes. Two crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, another struck the Pentagon and the fourth crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers and crew attempted to overpower the hijackers. To date, it remains the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history in terms of death toll.
The World Trade Center’s Twin Towers were built in the 1970s and, before the attacks, were considered among New York City’s most recognizable landmarks.
