The black dress Princess Diana wore to a Vanity Fair fundraising event for the Serpentine Gallery in London on June 29, 1994, the same night then-Prince Charles publicly admitted to infidelity, is set to go up for auction this December, Euronews reported.
Sotheby’s will offer the dress in New York with an estimated value of $150,000 to $300,000. Before the sale, it will be exhibited in London from Sept. 18 to 24, then travel to Hong Kong and Geneva before arriving in New York on Dec. 2.
Part of the proceeds will be donated to NHS Lothian Charity on behalf of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.
Designed by Christina Stambolian, the fitted, off-the-shoulder dress became one of Princess Diana’s best-known fashion statements. Diana reportedly initially planned to wear a Valentino dress to the event but changed her outfit after details of her original choice became public.
At the time, the media described the striking black dress as a statement of independence and confidence, and it became known as the «Revenge Dress.»
