Eamonn Keaveney, a 34-year-old resident of Claremorris, Ireland, has set a world record for the longest barefoot journey, walking all the way from Istanbul to his hometown. Kursiv LifeStyle explains what inspired him to undertake this extraordinary journey.
Keaveney’s journey began in Turkey and took him through Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Germany, France, England and Wales. Over 369 days on the trail, he endured scorching heat and cold while walking on dirt, asphalt, and rocky roads.
After walking for so long, the adventurer’s feet suffered from encounters with glass and thorns, resulting in minor skin injuries. However, one day, after being pricked by a blackthorn, he developed an infection that forced him to stop for a week. Shortly before reaching the finish line, he also broke a toe after tripping.
Keaveney said he trained for the journey by deliberately walking and running barefoot as much as possible to get his feet used to the strain of walking without shoes. That may be why the most uncomfortable part of the challenge for him wasn’t walking barefoot itself, but the backpack he had to carry the entire way.
During his journey, Keaveney often encountered surprised looks and, at times, a lack of understanding. For example, some shops and restaurants refused to serve him because he wasn’t wearing shoes. That being said, more often than not, people were simply interested in his journey and often tried to help, the adventurer said.
Notably, this wasn’t the first record the Irishman had set. In 2016, Keaveney walked 2,080 kilometers barefoot across Ireland, and in 2023, he crossed the country on a unicycle in five days, five hours and 23 minutes.
