It appears Dyson has a new contender for the title of ultimate bathroom gadget. After hair dryers, stylers and other beauty devices, the company has turned its attention to teeth with the Dyson CameraJet, an electric toothbrush with a built-in camera.
According to the company, the Dyson toothbrush not only cleans teeth but also automatically identifies the spaces between them and directs a stream of mouthwash into those areas.
The compact CameraJet head features a built-in 100,000-pixel macro camera that captures images of the mouth at 28 frames per second. A machine-learning system analyzes the images and identifies spaces between the teeth.
Once a space is detected, the toothbrush directs a stream of mouthwash into it in about 100 milliseconds. The result is a combination of an electric toothbrush and a water flosser. As users brush their teeth, the device also rinses hard-to-reach areas.
Designed for everyday use
Dyson is emphasizing not only the technology but also ease of use. The built-in reservoir holds 12.5 milliliters of fluid, while a special system maintains the flow even when the brush is held horizontally, such as when cleaning the inner surfaces of the teeth.
The device can also connect to the MyDyson app, where users can view a live camera feed, receive tips on brushing technique and see which areas of their teeth were cleaned thoroughly and which were missed. Dyson says camera images are not stored on the device or in the cloud.
A $499 toothbrush
The high-tech toothbrush also comes with specially formulated toothpaste and mouthwash, available for an additional $11.50. Among other things, the products are designed to prevent foam from interfering with the built-in camera’s ability to see the teeth.
The Dyson CameraJet went on sale Sept. 1 for $499. The kit includes the toothbrush, charging dock, travel case, toothpaste and mouthwash.
Judging by reactions on social media, the idea has generated plenty of humor. Users have joked about the price and questioned the need for a camera inside their mouths, while others wonder whether traditional flossing might simply be easier.
If Dyson can replicate the success of its beauty gadgets in oral care, the CameraJet could well become a sought-after high-tech gift.
