Arnaud Denis, a 43-year-old French actor and director, voluntarily ended his life in Belgium through euthanasia. He had suffered severe complications following the insertion of a hernia mesh implant.

In July 2023, Denis received a polypropylene implant following surgery for an inguinal hernia. The procedure did not go well, and his health deteriorated. In April 2024, the actor went to the U.S. to have the implant removed. However, he never recovered from the aftereffects of the initial surgery.

By that time, Denis had largely stopped leaving his home and could no longer lead his usual life. He described his condition as steadily worsening, with the pain intensifying and doctors having nothing left to offer him in terms of treatment.

In January 2026, the actor filed a complaint with the French prosecutor’s office regarding the complications from the implant, but the case was dismissed in late August. In March, Denis was admitted to a palliative care unit in Belgium, where he awaited a decision on his request for euthanasia.

«I thought medicine could help if I went to the hospital. I was wrong. For three years, I watched my condition steadily deteriorate while the healthcare system refused to see me as a person in need of help. I held on with all my might, but now I am giving up,» Denis said in his final post on Facebook.

Eventually, his request for euthanasia was approved and carried out in Namur, Belgium. As Denis’s lawyer revealed, the decision was made following consultations with three doctors against the backdrop of years of severe pain.

Denis was best known as a theater actor and director, notably for productions of «Les Liaisons Dangereuses» (Dangerous Liaisons) and «Les Femmes Savantes» (The Learned Ladies). He also founded the group «French Victims of Hernia Prostheses,» which records the stories of people who have experienced complications after hernia implant surgery.

Earlier this year, Noelia Castillo, a 25-year-old Spanish woman, secured the right to euthanasia after nearly two years of legal proceedings due to a conflict with her family, who opposed her decision.
