Restoration work on a mural depicting Dimash Qudaibergen in downtown Almaty may begin after Sept. 25, the Almaly District Akimat (mayor’s office) said in response to an inquiry from Kursiv.media.
In March, it was revealed that the mural had been painted over. The incident sparked an outcry among social media users and city residents.
Local authorities said the mural had deteriorated and announced that the wall would be redesigned with the artist’s consent. The district administration said the damaged image would be removed and a new portrait painted in its place.
New sketch still in development
Several months have passed and a new mural depicting Dimash has yet to appear. The akimat said preparatory work for the restoration is currently underway. According to the administration, this includes developing and approving a new design sketch.
«A specialist with whom a preliminary agreement has been reached will arrive in Almaty on Sept. 25, 2026, to work on the sketch. Upon his arrival, the necessary work to prepare and approve the sketch will be carried out,» the akimat said in its response.

However, the exact completion date remains unknown.
«The specific deadline for completing the work will be determined once the sketch is approved and the scope of the necessary work is finalized,» the mayor’s office said.
The administration also noted that qualified specialists would be involved in restoring the mural.
